More Ethnomusicology Archive recordings now online on California Light and Sound on the Internet Archive

The UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive is pleased to announce that more recordings from the Archive's collections are now available online as part of the California Light and Sound Collection on the Internet Archive.  California Light and Sound is a project of the California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP).

I thought I would highlight several of these recordings recently added to the collection.

I Wayan Gandera and Tjokorda Mas, UCLA, early 1960s.  Recorded by Robert Garfias and Garry Margolis.  I Wayan Gandera and Tjokorda Mas were instrumental in bringing Balinese music, especially the gamelan, to California and UCLA.  In 1952, I Wayan Gandera's father toured the western hemisphere as a member of the gamelan from the village of Pliatian.  I Wayan Gandera, Tjokorda Mas, and several other Balinese musicians were brought to UCLA in 1958 by a Rockefeller grant.   I Wayan Gandera taught at UCLA from 1960-1964, Tjokorda Mas taught at UCLA from 1960-1966.

Black Music and Musicians in Los Angeles:  Interview with Richard Anthony Dedeaux (1940-2013), June 2007. This project, "Documenting Black Music in Los Angeles," was funded by the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture Artsforum and the Office of the Chancellor (a collaborative project between the UCLA Center for Oral History Research, the Department of Ethnomusicology, and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies), 2006-2007, Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, Principal Investigator, Karin Patterson, interviewer.  Otis O'Solomon, Amde Hamilton, and Richard Anthony Dedeaux were the founding members of the spoken word poetry group the Watts Prophets.  The Watts Prophets' performances of poems, punctuated by their improvisational word riffs, are considered a forerunner of hip-hop.
