Many readers of SEM-L may be familiar with my videos, released in the 1990s. I am pleased to announce that all of these videos have been re-released in a new edition on one DVD entitled Mande Music and Dance through Multicultural Media and Lyrichord Records. The eighteen scenes were filmed originally on Super 8 film, most in 1970 when sync was not available. For the DVD release, all scenes have been subjected to digital editing, and through this process many have been brought into sync. The accompanying notes have been rewritten, and are now presented as a 46-page booklet in PDF and Word formats on a separate CD. The booklet now includes all song texts and conversations in Mandinka with English translation. Attached to this message is a page listing the contents of the DVD in more detail (See next page).
The DVD is available in two versions, one for individuals and one with performance rights for libraries. I have included links with the information on both below. Naturally it is my hope that libraries will purchase the DVD even if they already own the VHS tapes, but in this case my hope goes one step further: that librarians consider actually de-accessioning the VHS tapes called Music of the Mande, Parts I, II and III, since the DVD release represents such a dramatic improvement over the tapes. I am happy to say that the Oberlin Conservatory library has done this upon my request, and I hope this might set a precedent.
