Orientalism, Representation, and the Arts. This symposium explores "orientalism" in Western music and is dedicated to the late scholar and musician Edward Said. A concert by faculty artists from the Department of Ethnomusicology performing concerto-like works with the Department of Music's Philharmonia Orchestra is included. Speakers will explore the representation of cultural identity in Western and other forms of music and revisit issues raised in Said's influential book, Orientalism.

Hat Boi: Vietnamese Classical Opera. A lecture/demonstration by Mrs. Ngoc Bay, the only hat boi performer in the U.S. Hat boi, the Vietnamese classical opera (called Tuong in the northern part of Vietnam) has 500 years of history. It's stories are taken from the history and mythology of Vietnam and China. Originally a court art, hat boi has also been performed for popular audiences. The World of Ibn Battuta, International Explorer.
