Jeff Roy

Jeff Roy is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Ethnomusicology at UCLA, currently completing his dissertation on the music and dance practices of India's hijra (male-to-female transgender) communities. his work incorporates methodologies in documentary filmmaking, and engages theories in gender studies, performance studies and film studies. HIs work has been supported by fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, Fulbright-mtvU, Film Independent, the American Institute for Indian Studies, and the Society for Asian Music. Roy was recently admitted into UCLA's Collegium of University Teaching Fellows program for his course "Ethnomusicology of the Closet" which investigates cultural constructions of gender and sexuality using (ethno)musicological materials as a point of entry. When he is not writing or teaching, Roy produces and directs documentary films.
